CFD and NURBS for the Drawing of Fluid Flow in Classic Painting

This study explores the utilisations of Nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in art appreciation and art creation. The combination of NURBS and CFD can accurately and conveniently draw streamlines to reflect original shapes in art and analyse existing ones closely. Ingres' La Source was analysed using mathematical and engineering techniques with Computer-Aided Design (CAD), CFD and NURBS as tools. In the analysis, 2D scenes are converted into a 3D model based on perspective projection and CAD. Then the fluid flow is simulated using the Volume of Fluid (VoF) method. The discrepancy in the artwork is shown in the simulation results. In a sketch of a painting, a hypothetical scene with a fluid flow is simulated by CFD, and the streamline of fluid flow is expressed by the NURBS. The method provides a reliable reference for art appreciation and art creation, especially for realistic artworks.
