Interactive Projection on Objects: Book and Castle Ruin Model Cases in a Museum

This paper proposes interactive projection methods for enhancing visitor experience in museums. Two application case studies with a book and a castle ruin model are presented. An interactive projection book for folk tale playback is implemented with a top-mounted projector, USB camera, sub-monitor, and sketchbook with blank pages. We use QR code patterns attached to each page to control the narrative playback. A model of ruined castle is formed with layers of white foam-core panels. Visualized content with a projector includes current satellite images, geographic features, quiz about the castle battle, and horizontal visibility at any user-specified location. In both case studies, visitors gave our systems high ratings, proving that our interactive methods are effective in engaging visitors in the museum.
