Effect Of Nearby Lightning On The Corona Streamer Onset In Floating Electrodes

The lightning strike is a natural phenomenon which claims a significant number of lives each year. It also causes damage to infrastructure and property. A significant amount of research has been done to find solutions to this issue, but not all are successful. Persistent damages continue to impede the development of industries, communication networks and power systems. The overhead power transmission lines and the storage of crude oil by floating roof tanks are also not spared from this hazard. This paper aims to improve the techniques of measurement of electric fields generated by the lightning channel and consequently refers the obtained values to the critical background electric field for extracting the series gap distance that would be maintained between floating electrodes to prevent the corona streamer onset. The approach of the return stroke model applied to a modified transmission line with exponential decay with height is used to generalize different forms of equations of electric and magnetic fields suitable for processing the extraction of the features leading to the corona streamer near the channel. The series gap distance between the floating electrodes required to prevent streamer onset is calculated using the duration corresponding to the positive difference of the electric field obtained by subtracting the critical background electric field of 17 kV/m from the total electric field evaluated for various distances and heights.
