Inclusion in Grid Codes of the Requirements for Grid-Forming Inverters as Part of the Generational Mix

Grid codes govern the operation and integration of electricity grids. In South Africa, synchronous generators supply synchronized electric power to the grid. However, the transition to renewable energy sources with grid forming inverter capabilities is underway. Grid forming inverters synchronize with the grid’s voltage and frequency to stabilize the grid. This paper investigates how to revise South Africa’s grid codes to accommodate renewable energy sources with grid forming inverters. The study reviews current trends in other countries and examines the technical requirements for installing, protecting, and maintaining grid forming inverters. The findings will be useful for policymakers, regulators, and grid operators in South Africa as they develop and implement new grid codes to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources with grid forming inverter capabilities.
