Retrofittable Automatic Shifter of Rear-Derailleur with Mode-Based Transmission and IoT

This paper presents an innovative approach to enhance the efficiency and user experience of electric bikes by automating the gear-shifting process of the rear derailleur: Traditional gear-shifting methods require manual input from riders, which can be challenging and inefficient, especially in dynamic routes. The proposed system assumes control over the physical motion of the Rear Derailleur, precisely adjusting the gear ratio to match the riding conditions. The key innovation lies in the utilization of a mode-based transmission pattern specifically tailored for e-bikes. This pattern not only optimizes the power input from the electric powertrain but also addresses the critical issue of power distribution between human effort and the e-bike’s battery. Incorporating 5G and wireless technologies into our system further enhances its capabilities. We leverage 5G connectivity to enable real-time communication between the smart shifter, sensors, and mobile devices, ensuring seamless gear adjustments and enhancing the overall riding experience. The wireless aspect allows for remote monitoring and control through a dedicated mobile application, enabling riders to customize gear ratios and receive real-time performance data. Our approach represents a significant step towards achieving efficient power distribution in e-bikes, striking a harmonious balance between human effort and electric propulsion. As the e-bike industry continues to grow, the integration of 5G and wireless technologies paves the way for smarter, more user-friendly electric bike systems.
