Nursing Home Patient Monitoring System for Improved Healthcare and Outcomes

This work describes the design, development, and clinical test results of a customized smart brief and wrist wearable for nursing home patient monitoring. Six sensors measure key bio parameters optimized for patients in nursing home care. The wireless devices are powered by a rechargeable battery with a charge life of up to 2 months (brief wearable). Case examples from a single nursing home pilot study with over 100 patients are presented. The examples demonstrate early detection of fevers, dehydration, pneumonia, sepsis, and improved bed sore recovery. This system currently uses three sensors connected to the smart brief and three sensors connected to the wrist wearable to collect, upload, and process data using sensor fusion intelligence configured within a cloud-based system to alert the nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) of potential patient care issues.
