Analysis of Path Loss in DVB-T2 Broadcasting Systems for Urban Environments

This study aims to compare measurements and path loss propagation models, namely Okumura, Hata, and Two Ray Ground Model, for estimating path loss in metropolitan areas within the framework of Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2 (DVB-T2) transmission systems. The propagation model was verified through direct measurement of a 650 MHz DVB-T2 transmission from Pancur Batu to Belawan in Medan City. The validation criteria consisted of the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Average Error, and Error Standard Deviation. The average error of 9.3 dB was recorded when using Okumura model, compared to 4.18 dB when using Hata model and 24.29 dB when using Two Ray Ground Model. The findings suggest that the Hata model provides a more accurate estimation of the direct measurement data compared to the Okumura and Two Ray models, demonstrating superior performance. This discovery emphasises the suitability and precision of the Hata propagation model in urban settings for optimising the propagation of DVB-T2 broadcasting signals.
