Feasibility Study of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) in Muscat Area to Improve Voltage Recovery

Upgrading the transmission lines in order to solve the issues of high voltage deviation, voltage sag and power losses are quite expensive solution. The easier way can include installing compensating devices such as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTs) namely Static VAR Compensator (SVC) to retrieve the system into its healthy status. However, the unplanned installation of these devices may lead to unreasonable optimization results along with more cost. Therefore, it is extremely important to use an optimization algorithm that can optimize the system to achieve the desired expectations of the system enhancement. This paper provides a feasible study related to installing SVC in Muscat Area by using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to find optimum size and location of SVC to improve the voltage profiles.
