Comparative analysis of CO2 emission in Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa

In recent times, there has been a drive towards just energy transition. Developing countries such as South Africa, have found themselves at the forefront of this move. However, it is not apparent that the CO
2
emission profiles have been taken into consideration as the policies were being developed. As a result, this paper investigates the CO
2
emission profiles per annum, per capita, by sector and by energy source for Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. Evidently, these countries have significant differences in populations. However, Nigeria and Kenya show similarities in CO
2
emissions, particularly in transportation sector. These could enable such countries to share knowledge in the development of policies to reduce the CO
2
emissions by the transportation sector. Nevertheless, these countries are dependent on fossil fuels for their energy needs. Transition to renewable energy sources in these countries can have a significant impact on their drive to reduce CO
2
emissions.
