Security Threats and Mitigation Approaches for D2D Communication in 5G & B5G Wireless Networks

The 5G & B5G networks are densified heterogeneous wireless networks designed to increase throughput and reduce latency.D2D direct communication between devices, is a promising technology to achieve these aims with saving energy. However, D2D communication has serious designing challenges especially related to security. The security in resource constrained devices becomes more perplexing. The existing security schemes are deficient for D2D as the devices have to manage this at their own without sufficient resources. Therefore, need of light weight and efficient algorithms saving processing time, is an essential prerequisite. Compressed sensing based on chaotic systems, has recently been used for encryption which not only saves bandwidth but can also provide effectual security especially if fused with some smart crypto schemes like ECC. This paper analyzes the threat surface of D2D evaluating the existing threats and solutions with a purpose to identify the weak areas and suggest befitting improvements.
