Shield Wires for Reducing the Lightning-Induced Overvoltages on Overhead Lines

The estimation of lightning-induced over voltages (LIOV) is essential for recognising the lightning threat to power transmission networks and also helps in analyzing the technique to mitigate the same. In the present work, effectiveness of the shield wire on reducing the lightning induced overvoltage is studied and it is found that shielding wires depending on their relative placement with respect to the phase conductor can marginally reduce the LIOV. In order to compute LIOV, the lightning channel is modelled as thin wire and modified transmission line with exponential (MTLE) decay engineering model is adopted to evaluate the lightning electromagnetic fields (LEMF), The coupling equations are then solved using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique.
