Power Flow Control in a Grid Connected Solar PV Plant with Utility Scale Battery Storage

This paper presents a method for storage and utilization of energy in an utility scale battery bank through solar PV plant. The stored energy in the batteries can be used to support the grid. The proposed utility scale battery bank can meet the requirement of active power demand during peak hours or night time. Also, the stored energy can be utilized for power balance and grid faults. In this paper a 40-kW solar PV power plant with the storage battery rated at 800 V, has been modeled and simulated to support the grid. The generated solar power can be stored in the grid scale batteries for later use or ancillary service in the grid. This paper presents the control of active power and reactive power flow from inverter to the grid using the phase-locked loop (PLL) control method. The simulation results demonstrate the four common cases of the grid scale battery energy storage, i.e., battery charging, discharging, partial charging and grid fault.
