False Data Injection Attack on Voltage Monitoring and Control in Coupled Network

With the increasing deployment and integration of information and communication technology, the vulnerability of power systems to cyber-attacks has become a critical concern. One of the most significant threats is the False Data Injection Attack (FDIA), which manipulates sensor measurements to deceive the control systems and compromise the security and reliability of power networks. In this paper, we investigate the impact of FDIA on voltage control in a coupled network, where centralized control algorithms regulate multiple interconnected areas. Thevenin impedance-based Voltage Stability Index (VSI) is used to monitor the bus voltage at the control center. By injecting the false measurements adversary can show the wrong VSI at the control center which will mislead the power system operator. Therefore in order to detect these attacks on VSI supervised machine learning algorithm is used. The effectiveness and implications of the proposed attack strategy are studied in IEEE 5-bus system and IEEE 14-bus system, and the effectiveness of attack detection is shown in the IEEE 39-bus system.
