Contactless Finger Tapping Test Based on 60 GHz Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave Radar

As the population ages, there is increasing focus on prevalent neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease (PD), which is the second most common. Traditionally, early diagnosis using wearable devices such as accelerometers and gyroscopes plays a crucial role in slowing disease progression by detecting motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. This paper proposes a novel approach using frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar for non-contact measurement of the finger tapping test. It measures small displacements of the object using FMCW signals, allowing the trajectory of the finger movement during the finger tapping test. The collected time series data can then be used to develop a machine learning model to determine whether a finger tapping test result is normal or abnormal.
