Electronic Component Mounting with Liquid Metal for Highly Stretchable Electronic Devices

We demonstrated a method to mount rigid electronic components on stretchable wirings using liquid metal (LM) for highly stretchable and high-performance electronic devices. Stretchable electronic devices suffer from breakage around the components due to the stress concentration caused by the difference in stiffness and strain. This study proposes to mount electronic components on wiring with a stretchable kirigami structure up to the wiring edges using highly stretchable material (LM). The proposed method suppressed the differences in strain and stiffness within the wiring, and improved its stretch tolerance. The mounting using LM achieved 312.6% stretch of wiring, which was 7.4 times higher than that achieved using conventional solder.
