Microfluidic Biosensor for Rapid Detection of Salmonella in Raw Chicken Products

We have developed an impedance sensor for the rapid and accurate sensing of Salmonella typhimurium in raw chicken samples. The device features regions for concentrating Salmonella to a detectable threshold level, stopping the cells on the sensing electrode, and sensing Salmonella using electrodes coated with anti-Salmonella antibodies. The device limit of detection (LOD) was 1-3 cells/ml, with a detection time of 45 – 60 minutes, including the washing step. This detection time is notably less than that of conventional methods such as bacterial culture, PCR, and ELISA for Salmonella detection.
