Simplified Extraction of Peak Wave Period From HF-Radar Data

This letter describes a new method to extract the peak wave period of an ocean patch based on the received electric field from a high-frequency surface-wave radar (HFSWR) illuminating that patch. The method compares favorably with others in the literature, with an RMSE of 1.81 s, and a relative RMSE of 21.9%, when compared against a wave buoy, and unlike traditional wave period estimation algorithms, it does not require the full calculation of the Doppler spectrum or wave spectrum extraction.
