It Ain't Gonna Happen: Interplanetary Colonization

This paper presents a systematic review of the daunting challenges that cast doubt on the feasibility of interplanetary colonization, with a focus on Mars. Through an analysis of existing literature, we identify three primary barriers: the severe health risks posed by cosmic radiation, the psychological strain from extended isolation and confinement, and the overwhelming financial requirements associated with establishing and maintaining an extraterrestrial human presence. Our findings reveal that astronauts face an unacceptable risk of radiation-induced ailments, ranging from cancer to central nervous system disorders, which are further compounded by the psychological stresses of long-duration missions. Financially, the cost projections for a manned Mars mission are staggering, far exceeding the budgetary capabilities of current space agencies and the speculative revenue streams from private sector involvement. This paper concludes that, despite the allure of becoming a spacefaring civilization, the reality of interplanetary colonization remains grim. The ethical, logistical, and financial implications necessitate a reevaluation of our goals and a tempered approach to our interplanetary colonization aspirations.
