Development of an Efficient Method to Calculate the Electric Field Produced by Power Transmission Lines Considering the Buckling of their Conductors and the Change of Trayectory of the Lines

The electric field produced by power lines is of interest in many investigations since its calculation can be complicated due to the geographical distribution of power towers and the irregularity of the terrain. Additionally, a more detailed analysis must be considered, such as the deformation of the conductors due to their own weight and the change in the trajectory of the lines. In the present work, an efficient method is developed for calculating the electric field of power lines considering the effect of the deflection of the conductors (buckling), even the change in the trajectory of the line. To do this, the conductors of the line are simulated as segments of horizontal conductors (with a point charge at its center) that travel the path of the line. This value of the load of each segment is determined by applying the Dirichlet boundary conditions on each segment of the conductors. Through this procedure, the value of the electric charges that will produce the electric field is obtained. This electric field is calculated in a simple way by applying the formula for calculating the electric field due to point charge that represents line segment and then using the principle of superposition. This developed method is applied in different configurations of overhead transmission lines found in various investigations; the result obtained is the same with respect to the methods carried out in different investigations.
