Performance Analysis of Novel Differential Pulse Position Modulation in Wireless Optical Communications

In order to improve the performance of the pulse position modulation (PPM), this paper proposes a novel differential pulse position modulation (NDPPM) combining the advantages of differential pulse position modulation (DPPM) and multi-pulse position modulation (MPPM). After introducing its symbol structure and mapping relation, transmission capacity, bandwidth requirement, power requirement and error performance are analyzed, also compared with on-off keying (OOK) and three PPM schemes. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that NDPPM has higher transmission capacity than LPPM, DPPM and MPPM, lower bandwidth requirement than LPPM and DPPM, higher power utilization and better error performance than MPPM and OOK. And it does not require symbol synchronization, which can simplify the complexity of system implementation.
