Application of Geospatial Techniques for Estimating and Simulating Soil Erosion and Sediment Yield in Mat-I Creek, Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte, Philippines

The Mat-I Creek, one of the creeks in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte that leads directly to the Agusan River, has been reported to have high cases of sedimentation. This study simulates and estimates sediment yield and soil erosion in Mat-I Creek using various geospatial and hydrological modeling techniques. The sediment yield was calculated per rainfall using the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE). The average annual soil loss of the watershed was calculated using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The total sedimentation of the watershed in the rainfall event before Typhoon Odette during a moderate rainfall event was 596.84 cubic meters. During Typhoon Odette, it reached 39494.48 cubic meters and revealed four subbasins yielding a relatively high sediment yield. The study results indicate that changes in a particular area of a watershed can influence the behavior of the sedimentation of the said watershed.
