Electromechanical Analysis of DFIG under Winding Fault using Ansys Maxwell

The paper discusses the broken winding fault in a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). The broken winding fault is one of the common faults that occur in a doubly-fed induction generator. The customary reason for the occurrence of this fault is due to manufacturing defects, overheating of the conducting wires, or short-circuiting of the wires in the stator or the rotor. This paper presents a Finite Element based analysis of the model as it offers more data on the functioning of the generator in a faulty situation. The finite element model for the healthy and faulty condition was created using the ANSYS Maxwell 2D software. The single-phase and two-phase winding fault is created in the healthy model and analyzed same. The paper includes various analyses like variations in torque and phase currents, losses, changes in flux lines, and effects on flux density. Finally, a comparison was carried out on the behavioural characteristics of the faulted generator with the healthy one. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the debilitating effects of the broken winding fault on the generator.
