Realization of a Modified Interleaved Buck Converter for Charging of Electric Vehicle Batteries

Electric motors are used in electric vehicles instead of petroleum products as the primary source of propulsion. The reduction of contamination caused by consuming petroleum products is the main objective of introducing electric automobiles. One of the challenges with electric vehicles is effectively charging the battery to extend the battery's life. When a standard step-down converter is used in an EV charger, the converter load voltage and current have ripple, which reduces the battery's operating time. This impact is countered by using a modified two-stage interleaved step down converter, which reduces ripple at the input and output while also reducing the voltage and current strains across MOSFET switches utilized in the converter. Utilizing MATLAB-SIMULINK, the redesigned two-stage interleaved converter is constructed and investigated. The converter's performance is also compared to that of a standard buck converter, and tests have shown that interleaving increases the longevity of an EV charger by reducing ripple. For the purpose of proving the concept and validating the simulation findings, a hardware model of the converter is constructed. Implementing a converter for electric vehicles with less ripple content and improved charging system efficiency is the ultimate goal of this research endeavour.
