Switched Inductor Based Cell Balancing Topology For String of Li-Ion Batteries

Equalization among series-connected cells is essential to prevent overcharging or over discharging in a large size battery system in order to maintain battery performance over the long term. Cell balancing becomes essential for electric vehicles (EVs) because it improves performance, prolongs battery life, and ensures secure operation. The least expensive method is passive cell balancing, sometimes referred to as dissipative cell balancing, because it is the cheapest to develop and use. However, because of the substantial energy losses and the slow balancing pace, passive cell balancing is less efficient. When there is a limited amount of space available, this method, which employs a simplified control technique, can be applied. The excellent efficiency, precise voltage sensing, and quick equalization speed of cell equalization technique using inductor results in a desirable approach. In this paper both passive and active approaches’ benefits and drawbacks are discussed. The research investigation of the active cell equalisation architecture using inductor is subsequently provided. The flaw in traditional cell equalization using inductor is brought to light, and is further adjusted to have a quicker equalization period.
