From Classic Grids to Smart Grids - Evaluating the Energy Consumption of the Public Lighting System in Cluj-Napoca

The paper presents an inventory of the public lighting system components of Cluj-Napoca and identifies the types of electricity consumers, based on the total electricity consumption in the public lighting system in the city. An analysis of energy consumption over the period of one year is performed, to identify the consumption pattern. Existing optimal equipment and the one with potential for improvement are identified. Based on data from the field, the potential for reducing the energy used in the public lighting system by replacing sodium lighting devices with LED devices and with efficient telemanagement systems is estimated.
