Optimal Design of an Islanded AC-DC Microgrid using HOMER Pro

Microgrids have gained attention as a solution to improve energy efficiency, reliability and sustainability in various applications. Designing microgrids involves consideration of factors such, as energy sources, load demand and system layout. To simplify the testing and design of grid and off grid systems the HOMER model comes into play. Power engineers face challenges in optimizing energy efficiency while keeping costs affordable. They need to select energy sources based on their requirements and ensure long term efficiency savings through monitoring. HOMER utilizes optimization techniques and sensitivity analysis methodologies to examine system designs and address issues. In this study using HOMER Pro—a simulation program for analyzing renewable energy systems—we investigate the optimal architecture for an AC DC microgrid. The study covers an overview of microgrids along with an explanation of the HOMER Pro software. Furthermore, it provides a step-by-step tutorial, on creating a cost effective microgrid design while minimizing the present cost (NPC) without compromising on meeting load demands. The microgrid comprises of photovoltaic (PV) arrays a diesel generator, battery energy storage systems and a DC AC converter. The case study and proposed methods demonstrate the effectiveness of HOMER Pro, in designing the AC DC microgrid architecture.
