A Brief Review on Computational Approaches for Analysis of Retinal Fundus Images

In this era of interdisciplinary research, the world has seen numerous scholarly interests towards solving challenges related to health assessment with the assistive efforts of computational tools and techniques. One of the uniquely but widely reported challenges being explored by researchers is the analysis of retinal fundus images. Many researchers have proposed efficiently exemplary methods in this context. This paper presents a kaleidoscopic review on such computational approaches. This short review is presented in two distinct stages. The first stage depicts the various important tools which are effectively used prior to the introduction of deep learning tools and techniques. The second stage deals with the study of effectiveness of tools and techniques that use deep learning in analyzing retinal fundus images. Advantages and limitations are well discussed in both the stages. Comparative analysis for each stage is made and presented. Overall comparison is also depicted in a tabular manner to reflect the goodness as well as prospects for future research work.
