Frequency Response Based Stability Analysis of a Grid-Connected Wind Turbine

There are many ways to enhance the power transmission ability of grid connected wind-turbine, such as through series compensation devices and FACTS devices. The grid connected wind turbine with series compensation experience a problem of sub-synchronous control interactions (SSCI). The wind turbine may be significantly damaged as a result of SSCI. To address and validate the SSCI, time domain analysis are used. However, such kind of studies are time-consuming and requires analysis under various contingencies. Another alternative is to use frequency response concept to analyze the stability of grid connected wind turbine with series compensation by utilizing Nyquist criteria. This paper presents a study of a grid-connected wind turbine with and without compensation, as well as its stability analysis using frequency response and Nyquist criteria. The results are further validated using time domain simulation.
