Monitoring Hospital Activity Through Petri Nets

The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized several industries by optimizing and providing advanced services through the collection and analysis of data acquired via sensor networks. Furthermore, the introduction of the Web of Things (WoT) has resolved numerous challenges associated with IoT interoperability. IoT and WoT can benefit e-health systems through the collection and analysis of physiological data collected from patients using wearable devices or sensor networks. Moreover, radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is suitable for patient monitoring because it is a mature technology and passive RFID tags that store patient data are cost-effective. Therefore, the combination of the three technologies (i.e., IoT, WoT, and RFID) may afford a system in which patient data can be handled and monitored remotely and hospital staff can be optimally organized and managed. In this study, we propose a monitoring architecture based on RFID-enabled sensors that can analyze the availability and performance of hospitals in terms of health services using stochastic models.
