A New Design Technique for Pole-changing Induction Motors Considering Drive Cycle

Permanent magnet motors, which have a greater power density and better efficiency, are more commonly used in electric vehicles. However, when these motors are operated in a wide-speed range, their efficiency reduces. Consequently, it is necessary to seek alternatives. Multi-phase induction motors offer greater torque densities and fault tolerance compared to conventional induction motor drives. These motors are also capable of pole reconfiguration, enabling them to operate over a greater spectrum of torque and speed. This serves to extract more power during regeneration, thereby reducing the total energy consumption over the entire drive cycle. This study examines the suitable pole-pair combinations for a given torque-speed requirement in order to reduce the overall energy consumption of the system over a drive-cycle. ANSYS MAXWELL 2D is used for FEM analysis of designed machines. Using MATLAB/Simulink, mathematical models of the pole-changing induction motor and vehicle have been created for investigation. Simulation results of MAXWELL 2D and MATLAB/Simulink has been found to be effective in selecting the right pole combination.
