Study on Optimal Location for Installation of Line Reactors on Long EHV Transmission Lines

Line shunt reactors are used in long EHV transmission lines to maintain the voltage profile at the receiving end of the line and reduces the transient over-voltages generated in the line. The magnitude of transient over-voltages generated are affected by the location of these reactors. This paper investigates the effect of location of line shunt reactor on switching transient over-voltages., generated during EHV Line Energization and Re-Energization., using PSCAD/EMTDC software. A comparison is made between different case scenarios and an optimal location is presented at the end of the paper.
