Design And Development of Integrated Knee and Ankle Continuous Passive Motion Machine

Sports-related and common injuries affecting the knee and ankle may result in excruciating pain, mobility loss, and other symptoms. Continuous passive motion (CPM) devices have been used for the treatment of knee and ankle injuries, though current versions tend to just treat the knee joint, necessitating the employment of separate ankle flexion manually. The objective of the project is to develop and create a mobile app-controlled paired knee and ankle CPM device. The design is created with an emphasis on producing knee- and ankle-CPM that can satisfy patient needs whilst being lightweight and portable. The end product consists of two distinct pieces, one for the knee and one for the ankle, each having a motor, controller, and adjustable range of motion to facilitate safe movements. The NODEMCUESP8266, which acts as a two-way communication for the relays to switch on and off the machine, is the primary part of the embedded system. Relay devices are used to control the motors. Both manual and mobile application control of the equipment are available. For convenience of use, the automated mode of operation is carried out using application software. Our integrated knee and ankle CPM device has the potential to considerably enhance recovery outcomes for patients with knee and ankle injuries, home-based therapy patients, and geriatric patients. Its unique features and construction provide a more practical and efficient replacement for current single-joint CPM devices. By using this device, therapists may do ankle flexion and extension with little effort.
