Neem Leaf Extract As Corrosion Prevention And Inhibition Agent For Mild Steel In Acid Medium

Azadirachta Indica (Neem) plant extract was investigated as a non-toxic, green, biodegradable, and readily available, cost effective, organic green corrosion inhibitor (OGCI) for mild steel (MS) in 1M HCL and 1M H
2
SO
4
acid media by Gravimetric (Mass Loss), Potentiodynamic Polarization Method (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Gravimetric, Potentiodynamic and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy results indicate an increase in Neem extract dosage rate in both hydrochloric and tetraoxosulphate (IV) acid, resulting in an increase in inhibition efficiency. Increasing the extract concentration increases the charge transfer resistance (Rct) and decreases the double-layers capacitance (Cdl) because of the adsorption of N eem extract on the surface of mild steel (MS). The polarization results indicate that Neem extract exhibits mixed type inhibition behaviour on metal surface and adsorption fits well with Temkin isotherm model in H
2
SO
4
solution. The adsorption kinetic and energy of adsorption indicate Neem is adsorbed by physisorption. The findings from different characterization techniques, indicate alignment and agreement with Gravimetric method, and confirm the high potential of Neem plant extract as inhibitor for carbon steel in corrosive media of HCL and H
2
SO
4
and a competing alternate product to existing toxic, banned, and non-biodegradable chemical inhibitors currently in use in Nigeria and around the worldwide.
