Analysis of IGCT-type DC Dynamic Characteristics Based on Electromagnetic Transient Simulation

In light of the rapid rise of renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower, the global energy landscape is evolving significantly, posing new challenges for power grids. High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission has emerged as a critical technology for long-distance, high-capacity power transfer. LCC-HVDC is widely adopted, but is also vulnerable to commutation failures during AC grid faults, causing grid instability. To address these issues, Hybrid Line Commutated Converter based on IGCT (IGCT-LCC) technologies have been proposed. IGCT-LCC use Integrated Gate-Commutated Thyristors (IGCTs), effectively resolves commutation failures. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the IGCT-LCC-HVDC connected to the grid is studied. An IGCT-LCC-HVDC modelling method based on the electromagnetic transient simulation platform for large power grids is proposed, including electrical component modelling for high-speed simulation and control modelling for phase change failure suppression. Then, a small test case and a real grid test case are constructed to verify the feasibility of IGCT-LCC-HVDC connecting to the grid and the ability of low resistance to phase change failure.
