Method for FPGA-based Real-time Simulation Hardware Implementation

With the continuous expansion of power systems and the adoption of new power electronic devices, the dynamic characteristics of the grid have become increasingly complex. In this context, power system simulation, particularly real-time simulation, has attracted widespread attention. This paper proposes a method for FPGA-based real-time simulation hardware implementation. Firstly, a hardware-accelerated co-simulation platform architecture based on FPGA is designed. The electromagnetic transient simulation of fast dynamic converter models is separately implemented using FPGA, while the computation of the control system on the CPU side and the slow dynamic network are computed in parallel with multiple rates. Secondly, the FPGA hardware is optimized, and the simulation calculation module is designed for optimization to improve the overall efficiency of simulation calculations at a lower hardware resource cost. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that this method can meet the requirement of total simulation time consumed per time step being lower than the simulation time step. It also achieves high parallel efficiency, effectively improves the simulation speed of FPGA-CPU heterogeneous parallelism, and ensures real-time performance in simulation.
