Assessing the Techno-Economic Feasibility of Cogeneration Systems in Bangladesh’s Sugar Mills

This study addresses Bangladesh’s persistent energy deficit by proposing an innovative solution: small-scale cogeneration plants in sugar mills. Leveraging bagasse and biogas, the research estimates their potential for electricity generation, considering both seasonal variations and limitations. Economic feasibility is evaluated through cost analysis and break-even point determination. Environmental feasibility is assessed in terms of carbon dioxide generation. Results demonstrate significant electricity generation potential of 42.01 MW in-season and 68.98 MW off-season, capable of supplementing the national grid. This eco-friendly cogeneration system enhances sugar mills’ financial viability and contributes to Bangladesh’s power stability. The application of this study to North Bengal Sugar Mills showcases a promising 6.5 MW electricity generation capacity. The research advocates a profitable and sustainable future for Bangladesh’s sugar industry, offering valuable insights for energy-deficient regions globally.
