An Inverter Control Agnostic Fault Detection Solution based on the Dynamic Time Warping Philosophy

Deployment of inverter-interfaced renewable energy resources (IIRERs) in power systems has put a question mark on reliability of existing line protection schemes. Despite great economic and environmental benefits of IIRERs, the unpredictable fault behavior of IIRERs due to various inverter control philosophies makes the existing line protection schemes vulnerable to maloperations. This paper proposes a new local voltage information based fault detection scheme deployed using dynamic time warping technique, that is agnostic to controls implemented by neighbouring IIRERs. The proposed scheme is validated on CIGRE 14-bus system and IEEE 9 Bus system in the presence and absence of grid code for both operational and fault events. The results demonstrate reliable operation of the proposed fault detection scheme in the presence of IIRERs.
