Speed Control of DC Motor Using Sliding Mode Controller Tuned by Genetic Algorithm

This research work investigates the effect of gain parameter tuning of the Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) using Genetic Algorithm (GA) on the speed control of the DC motor. The SMC tuned by GA shows a superior result compared to Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller and, the Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuning method. Rise time, settling time, and, percentage of overshoot was considered as the performance parameter of the DC motor. Integral time absolute error was used here as the objective function for tuning the gain parameters of SMC and PID controllers. The Lyapunov function ensured system stability in the case of SMC. The effect of variation of gain parameters of the sliding surface was also studied. The chattering effect was reduced by implementing a pseudo function. The whole work is carried out using the MATLAB Simulink platform.
