Analyzing Controller Performance in Single-Phase Inverters under Variable Conditions - Part I: Proportional-Integral, Sliding Mode and Model Predictive Control Approaches

In this study, we analyze the performance of a single-phase inverter, using three well-known control methods: Proportional-Integral (PI) Control, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Model Predictive Control (MPC). The effectiveness of each approach was individually examined across different filter scenarios, offering a comprehensive evaluation of the response dynamics of each controller. An in-depth examination was carried out on the harmonic content, steady-state errors and ripple generated by each controller in the inverter’s output current. The findings reveal that while the PI controller offers straightforward applicability, it also leads to the introduction of greater harmonics, steady-state errors and ripple in comparison to the SMC and MPC controllers. Furthemore, the results suggest that, considering all parameters studied, the MPC method emerges as the most optimal controller for a single-phase inverter.
