Enhancement of Transient Stability for Coherent Generators in Multi-Machine Power Systems Using Static Var Compensator

The uninterrupted supply of electric power is the lifeblood of modern society. The modern power system has more interconnections which makes it complex and vulnerable, in this context, the stability of multi-machine power systems takes on paramount importance. Within these intricate networks, coherent generators, operating in synchrony, can be particularly vulnerable to transient disturbances that threaten the reliable operation of the entire system. Static var compensators (SVCs), are a sophisticated and versatile technology designed to inject or absorb reactive power dynamically. SVCs, often considered the unsung heroes of power system control, emerge as a beacon of hope in the quest for enhanced transient stability. By skillfully adjusting voltage profiles and mitigating oscillatory behaviours, SVCs offer a compelling solution to the unique challenges posed by multi-machine power systems, especially those comprising coherent generators. This paper has shown the enhancement of transient stability for coherent generators by incorporating the SVC in the multi-machine power system. To achieve this goal SVC has been integrated into the IEEE 39 bus test power system and investigated the system thoroughly. The results of simulations that were provided in this paper show the addition of a static var compensator has helped to increase the transient stability of coherent generators.
