Performance Improvement of PV Systems under Partial Shading Conditions

This paper presents a novel hybrid strategy for optimizing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) in photovoltaic (PV) systems operating under Partial Shading Conditions (PSC). The proposed approach combines a nonlinear Integral Backstepping Controller (IBC) with the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), aiming to achieve the Global Maximum Power Point (GMPP). The primary objective is to enhance the power output of shaded PV panels, improve overall PV system performance, minimize steady-state error, and enhance tracking speed. This strategy is centered around a current-oriented MPPT (COMPPT) integrated with a current controller. Additionally, the global stability of the system is ensured through the application of Lyapunov stability criteria. To validate the effectiveness of this hybrid controller, experimental tests were conducted on a PV system operating under partial shading conditions. These results were compared with those obtained from applying SSA in conjunction with a PID controller, all while operating under identical weather conditions. The experimental findings highlight the superior dynamic performance of the proposed MPPT strategy, demonstrating its capability to reduce steady-state error and eliminate ripples effectively.
