An Investigation of Recent Power System Oscillations in North Eastern Region Grid of India

With the large-scale deployment of phasor measurement units, dynamic phenomena like low-frequency oscillations can be monitored in India. Low-frequency oscillation monitoring is required for the wide-area stability assessment in the power systems. The paper presents an investigation of oscillation events observed in the North Eastern Region grid of India. The paper provides a root cause analysis of the recent oscillation events by identifying the unstable oscillation-initiating node in the grid. Using archived event data. The investigation was carried out in two primary steps namely modal analysis and energy computation. It also highlights the reason behind the vulnerability of the North Eastern Region grid to increasing oscillations. The investigation is helpful to the system operator in pinpointing the unstable node in the grid.
