Feasibility Analysis of a Hybrid Off-Grid Microgrid to Power Saint Martin’s Island of Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s recent economic growth, fueled by the nation's fast development, has boosted the country's need for energy and increased its dependence on fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. This paper discusses the feasibility of a hybrid micro-grid for the effective exploitation of electricity in St. Martin, an island inside the Bay of Bengal located 34 kilometers from the mainland. By analyzing the performance of several configurations by combining different components and diverse characteristics, an ideal configuration was found using a methodological approach. Various features of the hybrid microgrid are examined and optimized in order to reach the best configuration. The study suggests PV/Wind/Battery/Diesel hybrid system as the ideal hybrid microgrid system. The design comprises the size and placement of the wind and solar energy generators, the size of the diesel engine, and the ability of battery to store energy. An efficient energy management system that maximizes the use of renewable energy sources, reduces dependency on diesel generation, and assures a steady and dependable power supply for the island’s users will receive special focus. The viability and sustainability of the selected microgrid is also evaluated in terms of sustainability – technical, economy, society and environment. The project’s feasibility has been assessed based on a number of factors, including the initial capital cost, operation and maintenance costs, and the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. The suggested PV/Wind/Diesel/Battery hybrid microgrid might be used as a replicable model for other areas with comparable energy issues, advancing the development of resilient and sustainable energy systems.
