System Strength Impact Assessment of Power Systems

This paper presents an assessment of system strength by analyzing the available fault level (AFL) and the variations in AFL with increasing penetration factors for three different generations: asynchronous generation (AG) e.g., induction generator, inverter-based generation (IBG) e.g., photovoltaic, and battery storage system (BSS). System strength in the power system is analyzed considering faults at a particular location. The effects of system strength are evaluated considering Tasmanian power system and IEEE 14 BUS system. The integration of AG reduces system strength, while the other two generations have a negligible impact on system strength. Hence, it is crucial to address the AG integration issues for ensuring system stability. This research also aims to conduct dynamic simulations of these systems to analyze stability and mitigate risks. Incorporating the static condenser (STATCON) improves the strength and stability of the system and mitigates the risks. PSS®E Xplore 34.0 software platform is used for all the simulation purposes.
