All-Optical Realisation of 2-Bit Up Counter Using Nonlinear Switching Structure

Optical networks are regarded as the elixir for bandwidth-related issues and network traffic. The employment of Opto-switching methods combined with logic gates can tremendously enhance the speed of communication systems deployed in the modern scenario. We propose a novel approach to sequential-circuit design utilizing a Micro Ring Resonator (MRR) as the foundational structure to realize the aforementioned advantages. The 2-bit bidirectional UP counter has been actualized using a Delay flip-flop and is grounded on the MRR structure. The counter begins its counting from 0(00) to 3(11), and covers the sequence (0,1,2,3). The truth table thus provided confirms the counter's synchronization behavior and the MATLAB simulated result justifies the counting action. Our work has integrated optical principles and sequential-circuit design which paves the way for further advancements in optical switching.
