Finite Element Modeling and Analysis of Hemodynamics in Middle Cerebral Artery

This work presents a realistic finite element modeling approach for the analysis of hemodynamics in middle cerebral artery (MCA). In contrast to many other simplified models, the proposed model considers a perforated domain at the end of the artery based on the theory of ramification, which is responsible to increase the pressure inside the artery through raising the hydraulic resistance. Thus, the proper modeling criterions and outlet boundary conditions helps to mimic the physiological scenario inside the artery. In particular, the systolic pressure of about 115 mmHg has been demonstrated inside the MCA keeping the blood flow velocity (57 cm/s) similar to that of physiological environment. Due to the perforated domain, the increment of the compactness by 112.2 times provides 85.12 % change of pressure than the truncated artery. Such proportional dependency of pressure on the compactness will be helpful to develop different patient-specific models. Therefore, the artery model with the perforated domain is suitable to analyze the hemodynamic parameters in medium and small artery system, as it has the potential to mimic physiological phenomenon.
