Design and Performance Evaluation of 12/8 Hybrid Excitation of Switched Reluctance Motor for Electric Three-Wheeler

The purpose of this article is to propose a 12/8 hybrid excitation of switched reluctance motors (HESRM) for electric three-wheelers. Initially, the motor parameters are derived using dynamic equations of vehicles and analytical calculations. The material analysis for standard 12/8 SRM is performed, and M-19 proves to be more efficient and has less torque ripple. Further analysis involves the investigation of the utilization of permanent magnet-assisted switched reluctance motors using various magnet materials, revealing that samarium cobalt-aided permanent magnets produce higher performance. The key objectives of this work are to acquire the requisite average torque, high torque density, and greater efficiency with smaller machine volumes by adopting a permanent magnet. Therefore, a comparative analysis is made between conventional 12/8 SRM and samarium cobalt-aided 12/8 hybrid excitation of switched reluctance motors, considering machine parameters such as machine lengths and stator outer diameters. The machine performance analysis is carried out using FEA-based software. The results show that the samarium cobalt-aided 12/8 HESRM provides the desired torque, high torque density, and efficiency achieved through utilizing less machine volume with the aid of a permanent magnet, making it suitable for electric three-wheelers.
