Influence of Short-Circuit Arc Resistance on Distance Protection

The presence of fault resistance can introduce inaccuracies in estimating the fault distance within a transmission line, potentially leading to unreliable performance of a distance relay. In this study, overhead transmission lines are a critical component of power systems and represent the most cost-effective means of transmitting electricity from remote sources of generation to the end customer. Therefore, it is crucial to protect and maintain them in service to ensure a secure power supply for end-users and safeguard the capital investments of power companies. Arcing faults are a common occurrence in power systems, and understanding the effects of fault arcs is essential for power system protection. Numerical algorithms can be developed to analyze and pinpoint the position of arc faults in power systems. The aim of this research is to develop a model of arcing faults and investigate their impact on distance protection.
