Design and Simulation of an Double Balanced Mixer for Radar Applications at X band

As there is a rising demand for new scientific and technological advancement in wireless communication, there is large potential of research in this area of expertise. For any wireless system, it is essential to include a transmitter, channel of propagation and a receiver. The most critical component in a receiver is the mixer. This paper shows an Double-balanced Active mixer that is designed to receive radar frequencies working at X band, which is Down-converted at operable frequency, for various RADAR applications. A pHEMT Transistor with ATF-36077 part number is utilized for down-converting an RF signal of 10GHz with an LO Signal of 10.07GHz, with an input power of -2dBm at LO Path and -10dBm at the RF Path to get an output response at 70MHz as IF. The transistor undergoes biasing and stability checks across various frequencies. To enhance conversion gain of the mixer and achieve return loss matching, a circuit is crafted specifically for the transistor. The topology chosen is the Double Balanced Mixer containing active components in the Gilbert cell configuration. This Mixer circuit is meticulously designed and simulated using ADS. The achieved Conversion Gain obtained for this mixer results to 10.04 dB, The design showcasing excellent linearity and return loss along with a commendable conversion gain.
