Design of IoT-Based Electrical Energy Meter

Currently, most of the monitoring of electrical energy usage in buildings is carried out manually. The implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology is essential for efficient and effective electrical energy usage monitoring. In this paper, we present the design of an IoT-based electrical energy meter and an SOA-based electrical energy monitoring service system platform. The IoT-based electrical energy meter utilizes ESP32 and a digital power meter with Modbus RS485 capability, enabling it to measure current, voltage, frequency, power factor, power, and energy. The research methodology in this paper consists of three stages. It begins with a literature review on electrical energy consumption monitoring from previous studies, followed by the design and testing of an IoT-based electrical energy meter. This paper provides a design for an IoT-based electrical energy meter and a service framework that could prove valuable for future research in establishing a service system platform for electrical energy monitoring.
